Hello all,

It is with great sadness that we have to announce that Charity Cities Unleashed will not be running any more books.

During the last 2 years we have had an amazing run, raising more than £90,000 for charities in 4 cities around the UK and hopefully introducing people to new and interesting businesses in their area as well.

Unfortunately due to the current and probably future economic conditions, business is tough. We have tried to work with partners who are in a strong financial position but even so, partners do go out of business. When that happens, whilst we always try to either find replacements this has not always been possible. And has lead to some disappointment amongst everyone who has bought a book.

As importantly, there is significantly more competition in the market now for vouchers, both from Groupon, living social, KGB deals and local papers. For these reasons and others, we are no longer able to continue in business.

We hope you have all enjoyed the books, experienced both old favourites and new places because of the books, knowing that you and several thousand others have helped us to raise over £90,000 for some great local charities.

So here is to you all, businesses, charities and customers, without you this project would never have happened, it has been a roller coaster couple of years but something none of us at Charity Cities Unleashed would have missed for the world.

VAT Rise – we have kept the price at £50.00

Hello all,

It is the new year and unfortunately a new VAT % of 20%. For all our 2010/2011 projects we have decided to absorb the VAT rise so that anyone who wants to have a great time in and around Sheffield still can for the incredible price of £50.00 whilst still raising 30% of revenue for charity. So if you have bought a book, then please do use the vouchers, if you are wondering about buying a book, then it is no more expensive than before.

TKD – A great way to overcome the New year sloth

It’s that time of year again, when we all pinch more than inch and decide yet again to join a gym and with that in mind we have some lovely gyms to join. But this year, we also have the Sheffield & Doncaster Tae Kwon Do school in the book, so why not try something a little more unusual, possibly a little more fun at times and something you can do with all the family and join them.

They are Sheffields Premier martial arts school and have classes to suit everyone, so why not use one of the more unusual vouchers in the book and treat yourself to something different at the Sheffield & Doncaster Tae Kwon Do school

Toni and Guy Update

As you may already be aware, Toni and Guy Ecclesall Road has gone out of business. We a striving to get a replacement salon to honour this voucher but in the mean time, Toni and Guy, Sheffield City Centre, is offering a 15% discount to all voucher holders on any service in branch. To book an appointment, simply call the number in the gift book as all phones have been diverted from the Ecclesall Road branch to the City Centre Branch.

We aim to have this matter resolved by the mid to end of January.

Pete’s Photo school – All good

Hi all,

We just wanted to let you know that if you have had problems contacting Pete about his lessons, you should not have any more from now on. Unfortunately he has had a a severe illness in the family that has taken him away for a few weeks, however he is back and will be sorting things out. We will keep in contact with him and ensure that we keep you all updated.

Unfortunately the salon owner (franchise) has closed the franchise, so while they are potentially going to open up again, it is unlikely that they will open under this gentleman. This closure does not appear to be for financial reasons but for personal ones, unfortunately we do not know what these are but will try to find out. We have worked hard to ensure that the businesses involved were financially stable but this does appear to be because of problems we could not have forseen.

However, because of our experiences last year, we have planned for a few closures and this is why we have a number of salons in the book and over £1,100 worth of vouchers. We sell the book as containing £1,000, in fact it contains over £1,100 of vouchers, the idea being that we have put in additional value to compensate for any businesses that disappear during the project.

We have met with the overall controller for Toni and Guy in Sheffield and are looking into what can be done with them and will keep everyone updated and when we have the exact reason for the closure we will (if possible) let people know.

Spa 1877 – A Special offer

We have met with the Spa1877 and discussed the incredible level of demand for their space during the last month or two of the project. They obviously have a limited space and time slots available for everyone to use (this is both from a Health and Safety perspective as well as a quality one) and the need to balance full paying customers with Charity Unleashed voucher holders. Unfortunately what has happened in the last month is that they have been swamped with over 800 people attempting to use the facilities on the vouchers. This is more than double the number of people that they would expect to take on a monthly basis (in order to support the 4,000 books sold) and has put a massive strain on their resources and cash flow as well as impacting the high level of service they expect to offer individuals who come to the Spa.

Unfortunately what this has meant that is some people will not have been able to use the voucher within the 12 months it has been valid, so we have been working with Spa1877 on what we can do to enable those with vouchers remaining the chance to experience the luxury of Spa1877.

What they have come up with is a two for 1 offer, valid Monday to Thursday until the 31^st December 2010, this is exclusively available to holders of the Charity Unleashed 2009/2010 gift book who have a voucher remaining.

‘Unleashed’ is back!

Supporters of Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity are being urged to snap up the new edition of a treat-filled voucher book which last year raised £65,000 for the cause.

Sheffield’s leading cancer charity has been chosen along with the Cash for Kids charity as beneficiaries of the Charity Unleashed experience book – a set of vouchers worth £1,000 that can be bought for only £50.

This year, the vouchers, provided by 33 of Sheffield’s leading businesses, include a one night stay in a double/twin room at the Copthorne Hotel, a seven day gym pass for two at Sheffield International Venues, a cut and blow dry at Toni & Guy, tickets for Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday and many more value for money offers.

A proportion of the funds raised from sales of the book will be split between the Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity and the other charity Cash for Kids.

Catherine Newman, senior fundraiser for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity, said: “Last year’s experience book was such a success and caused a real buzz across the city so we are thrilled to be part of the initiative again.

“It is a really exciting idea and a great way for Sheffield people to support the work of Weston Park Hospital while enjoying the benefits the vouchers bring.”

The prestigious Copthorne hotel is one of the businesses taking part and general manager, Orla Watt, is confident the initiative will have a really positive effect on the hotel and the wider Sheffield economy.

Says Orla: “We are delighted to be working with Charity Unleashed to help raise money for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity, a charity that we have always supported. The vouchers are not only raising money for such a worthwhile cause but also increasing business for all the companies taking part.”
